Sometimes getting caught in the grind of daily tasks and responsibilities may overshadow the bigger goals you always thought you would achieve.  In order to work professionally to fulfill career success, you have to regain focus.  Here you’ll find a step-by-step guide that will help you move beyond the mundane everyday tasks and help you work for a better and more fulfilling career.

Professional Development within an Institution - If you are already in a company setting that you enjoy and appreciate but just want to advance your career, you have to clarify your goals.  Set a short and long term plan for your advancement.  Identify what has to happen in order for you to advance.  Identify the key players in your company that can help you achieve your goals.

Develop Your Skills – The earlier you realize what your true career development goals are, the earlier you can start developing those skills you need to reach your goals.  However, regardless of where you are in your career, you can work to move forward.  Find out where you need to improve your skills.  You may need to continue your education; you may need to attend conferences or network with new people.  Pinpoint what your weaknesses are and how you can strengthen them.

Is Your Current Job a Good Match for You? – While you may have to keep your job to pay the bills, is this really the place you want to be for the long term?  Does company policy match your personal ideals and can help facilitate your career goals? It is often very hard to be happy if you’re working in a company environment that drains you personally.  However, if you and your company are moving in the same direction you are more likely to be a happier person both personally and professionally.

Communicate Clearly – It is very important to have open communication with your management.  If you are aiming to upgrade your responsibilities, ask management what it will take in order to improve a career upgrade.

The Hardest Part – Too often, the hardest part is really being honest with yourself and identifying your career goals.  Once you have a clear idea of what you want to do with your career, and you are determined, the rest of the process begins to fall in place.  The hardest part is actually starting the process.

Seek Help – Sometimes individuals know that they want to change career paths, but don’t really know how.  In this case, you may want to check out some expert professional development advice.  Ask managers to give feedback, sometimes it's easier for others to clarify strengths and weaknesses.
